One of the last wild Camargue mustangs, Franquevaux, Southern France

A centuries old shipping canal runs along the French Mediterranean coast line: the Canal du Rhône à Sète. Today, commercial shipping has ended and the canal is used mainly by pleasure boats and fishermen. Near Franquevaux, just a few kilometers east of the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes, the canal passes the shallow Étang de Scamandre. Standing on the foredeck of our rental houseboat, I discover this beautiful Camargue horse, feeding on the reeds along the lakeshore.
